State and Open Titles 2007
The 3rd Queensland State Title was held at Southport Yacht Club over the weekend of July 14 and 15. There were 35 competitors in the regatta, 20 open fleet and 15 in the novice or green fleet. For many of the green fleet competitors this was their first regatta outside of club racing. The regatta was also the last chance for the Australian team competing in the Optimist World Championship in
Sardinia to compete against each other domestically, with 4 of the 5 AUS worlds entrants present. Saturday saw race one sailed in a light SW breeze go to Stephanie Doyle with Sean Ott second. The lunch break also heralded a break in the wind and the fleet waited on a nearby sand bar for the afternoon sea breeze to fill in with 2 races sailed in a NE breeze. Sam Gilmour from WA showed his mastery of the tide by winning both races. In the green fleet after day one Kyle Gordon and Josh Gray were tied for first place on 4 points each, closely followed by Fergus Galloway on 7 points. Sunday morning provided a full tide and a light NW wind which the Race Committee quickly utilized to get a race away in front of the Hollywell Clubhouse. Angus Galloway made the best of the tricky conditions to win this heat closely followed by Thomas Kennedy from TAS in second and Shelley White in third. The green fleet race was a little more testing for the novice helms, struggling against an increasing tidal flow as the wind decreased. The wind dropped and could not be revived, so the regatta was called after 4 races. Shelley White was crowned Qld State Champion, Sam Gilmour was the Open Champion and Josh Gray won the Green Fleet. The regatta was sponsored by Doyle Sails Qld, Toll Transport and Ozi Opti. A new Doyle sail was presented to the best placed girl (Shelley White) and boy (Stuart Skinner) continuing on in the class next season. Ozi Opti provided the charter boats and some door prizes and Toll Transport shipped the container of charter boats to and from the regatta. Shane Smith is the team coach for the Optimist World Championship being held in
Italy, July 22 to Aug 2. Shane was presented with a coach’s jacket and bag courtesy of the parents and Ozi Opti. The Worlds competitors Sam Gilmour, Sean Ott, Stephanie Doyle, Milly Bennett & Matt Wearn (absent) were all provided with AUS rash tops courtesy of AIODA.
