It may be a few years before any of our club’s Opti sailors compete at an Olympic level, but several of them appeared in TV commercials broadcast during the Beijing Olympic Games. The series of Coles Fresh Food commercials focused on aspiring young athletes, and their mothers who are always there with support and wholesome fresh food.

BYRA was chosen as the sailing location for the production and RPAYC’s Opti sailors were called on to provide the sailing talent. The kids enjoyed the experience of working with a professional film crew for the day and many of them could be recognised when the first commercial went to air during the Opening Ceremony.

The two main characters, Cooper and Suzie Johnston were kept very busy during several hours of filming.

Coop did a great job with the sailing, and was responsible for some very subtle product placements in the close ups, which should earn him a good deal on a North sail and a subscription to Australia Sailing magazine.

As well as being a lot of fun for the sailors, the TV commercial was a wonderful opportunity to promote Australia’s fastest growing junior class.
