Three great WA regattas in four weeks!!

WA Optimist sailors have been treated to three great regattas in the last month. The Ronstan Indian Ocean Classic held at Fremantle SC attracted 46 entries and 12 silver entries, including the top team from Singapore. Two weeks ago, the Royal Perth YC Optimist Cup had 39 entries. This weekend, the Junior Australia cup (31 entries) was raced on Perth Water in front of the city and added to the spectacle of the Australia Cup match racing event.    These three regattas were won by Sam, Nia and Lachy the three WA members of the Australian Optimist Team going to the Worlds in Langkawi at the end of the month  (Sam was the first Australian in the IOC).    Coach, Diego Figeruoa commented that conditions this weekend on Perth water, were very similar to those expected in Langkawi and the regatta had been excellent preparation for the team heading to the Worlds.  Results Junior Australia Cup  Results RPYC Optimist Cup   Results Ronstan IOC

CLOSE FINISH FOR RPYC MINI-SERIES

With 58 entries at the Royal Perth Mini Series, racing was always going to be exciting! Both the 31boat Gold fleet and 27 boat silver fleet achieved ten races over the weekend. The weather provided a mix of light conditions right through to a stomping sea breeze. The Gold fleet top three finished a point apart and congratulations go to Sam Blackburn for taking out the championship. This is Sam’s second WA ranking regatta win for this season. Doug Campbell and Lachy Gilmour pushed Sam to the last race for an exciting finish to the event.  The silvers, coached on the water by Kate and Jack demonstrated some great sailing and also hairy moments for the Gold fleet when the fleets intersected.  There is no doubt that some of these silvers are biting at the heels of the gold fleet and undoubtedly we will see them in the Gold fleet over the next few weeks / months.  Well Done to all who attended and to RPYC who put on such a great event.

WESTSAIL AND WA STATE YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP

Nineteen Optimist sailors spent the first four days of the school holidays training at this years’ Westsail.  The training camp was attended by approximately 125 of the States best young sailors and around 90 of those stayed at the Point Peron Camp. Optimist coaches Diego Figueroa, Ryan Hannan and Kate Wearn were able to use the variety of conditions to provide the sailors with excellent coaching. Staying on the camp is not only part of the fun (especially morning fitness!) , but also allows the sailors to be part of the class debriefs, larger group lecture sessions  and probably most importantly to build friendships with the sailors from the other classes and get to know some of the other coaches in the State. Also involved were Belinda Stowell (Olympic Gold medallist) and Arthur Brett (Previously Aus Olympic Coach)  who pay particular interest to the development within the Optimist class.  The training was followed by the State Youth Championship. In the Optimists, the 7 race series had six different race winners demonstrating the increasing breadth in WA.  The overall winner was Sam Blackburn, second Lachy Gilmour and third Douglas Campbell.
