Western Australian History

The optimist fleet in Australia was formed at the inception of the late Huck Scott-olympic silver medallist, then RFBYC club coach, who was invited as head coach for the zimbabwean sailing school (which had approx 200 oppys sailing at one club on a lake in zimbabwe at their annual 9 day sailing school.)
The number of boats, organisation and level of racing and standardisation of boats across the globe, coupled with the top 5 sailors getting selected and attending the optimist world championships that year sparked Hucks interest.
On his return, he enlisted the support of sailor Syd Corser, and America’s cup manager Jack Baxter to build 6 oppies for RFBYC, which was the start of the Australian optimist fleet, in 1988.
